I debated writing this post because the topic is not really something I talk about.
I’m normally not an anxious person. I’m really a go with the flow and this too shall pass kind of girl. But sometimes, even the smallest of things could give me anxiety and ruin my entire day. Anxiety is not something I deal with a lot, so when I do have this crazy, uneasy feeling, it’s honestly hell for me.
Whether I’m having uneasy feelings about a relationship, personal issues or a specific situation, what truly works for me is keeping myself super busy. If you look up ways to cope with anxiety, most articles will tell you to breathe and rethink the situation. Thanks for the obvious, google. Would have never thought of that myself.
Here are a few things that keep me occupied:
Listen to a Podcast.
I was always opposed to podcasts because I’d much rather listen to music. But I’ve been getting more into them because I seriously get so lost in the moment in these things. You’re so in the moment that you totally forget about any and every negative thought you could possibly be having.
I’m currently listening to Call her Daddy which is the most inappropriate and vulgar thing I’ve ever heard (thanks, Alina!)…….but it’s so entertaining and I really can’t stop tuning in.
Literally get in your car right now and drive yourself to Target. Not kidding! Moving around whether it’s a trip to Homegoods or a walk to your job’s bathroom helps you regain sense of control. I say Target & Homegoods because it’s so easy to get distracted by the random shit they have. And well, distractions are great.
Watch Youtube/read blogs.
Like podcasts, I get so occupied when I’m watching a Youtube video (usually a makeup tutorial) or when I’m reading someone else’s blog. I could spend hours reading through other people’s creativity.
Look up DIY projects.
I love coming across those DIY project videos on Twitter because they are absolutely ridiculous. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, sorry!
Anyway, looking up DIY projects brings me a sense of peace because again, I love learning about other people’s creativity.
Put your phone on do not disturb or shut it off.
I say do not disturb because if I’m anxious about something, I’m 100% talking to my friends about it all day long (I know i’m a pain, sorry girls!) But seriously, I lose self-control and find myself over-venting. It’s good to let things out and talk it through, but when it’s so constant, it’s unhealthy. You’re never going to get over a situation if you keep going on and on about it.
Putting the phone down while keeping myself busy helps me relieve the stress a bit. You gain nothing out of scrolling through IG when you’re feeling anxious.
Look up recipes.
At this point, i’m almost an expert donut maker. Looking up recipes and actually going through with them keeps me super occupied and even a little exhausted.
That being said, I will leave you with something that works for me and hope it truly works for you.
